Literally everything you’re describing was way worse a lifetime ago, not my lifetime, but my grandparent’s.
My grandfather was a 10yo jew in occupied france, and my grandmother grew up in a barn with no running water or power with a dozen siblings during the US gilded age. Shit was so much worse back then.

I feel like nuclear bombs were as severe. I also think that even the worst case realistic scenarios for climate change are not nearly bad enough to cause the scenario you described.

Exactly, I wonder how hopeless people felt in 1940’s europe

Well, at least lula won in brazil

It’s in french. You don’t have a preferred demonym in french. It’s like how the Dutch call themselves Netherlanders, but very few people say that. (Or how in french they’re called Hollandais)
Also how is it disrespectful???

Well, not like “I hate Americans” but moreso like “I dislike the country that is the US, I dislike it’s influence and how it uses it’s power”. I am a francophone, and it’s why I use the term, the one time I was in the US the people seemed very nice.

It is more of a shibboleth, but that is what I meant when I made the thread, I’m also from Québec and it was an example I had in mind when creating the thread, just didn’t mention it because it seemed a bit niche.

That’s because you’re the goat and photon is awesome

Yeah you’re right I did mean shibboleths, just didn’t know the term, sorry, should I edit the post?

“Those people” or “You people” really gets me

Very good example, thank you, whenever someone says “partner” I immediately assume they’re at least somewhat woke.

Yes 100%, it’s incredibly clunky in english but in french it’s just as nice to say as the “American”

They’re talking about a literal “dog whistle” I guess.

Well, those were the stated reasons of everyone I asked.

I’ve never heard someone say that irl, although I have seen it on lemmy, but I’ve heard tons of people say the french equivalent irl, which is why I said it was francophones. It is based to say it in english though.

I prefer the prequels 😔

I do agree that American defaultism only hurts them, but at least in english it’s rare enough that saying “American” doesn’t count as US defaultism imo, I’m in Québec and I’d say at least 20% of people here say that.

My favorite example is how francophone leftists or those who dislike america will call americans “USians”. (Américain -> États-Unien)
“90% as good for a fraction of the cost” is a set/premade phrase and so the numbers mean nothing, since the person who said it didn’t come up with it.
Like, he extrapolates off of it but I’m willing to bet the number is from the expression.
