  • Yeah but speaking as meatman I’m okay with meatman dying. Robot me will be the real me, meat me is ephemeral.

I don’t believe in souls. I view my existence as like a wave, I am briefly in this cohesive form and will inevitably break upon the shore and both cease to be a wave yet forever be the ocean. Continuously moved and reshaped and never the same wave I was.

A body that allows my perception of existence to continue would prevent that, I would be able to continue to “exist” as I perceive it for much longer.

So yeah for me at least you can skip the gradual stuff. Just ctrl + c, ctrl + v and recycle the original.

  • I’d need to completely own it. I don’t want my extended memory storage to now also include product placement in my childhood memories or the cops can make my bionic legs stop working or whatever.

However, in the hypothetical situation where I completely own my augmentations, 100% I’m getting enhancements. In fact I would question the efficiency of giving me implants, it might just be easier to copy my brain into a completely robotic body.

  • Is the crux of this question that you’re trying to increase your attention span?

Others have given good recommendations of long-form content to try, I’d also go as far as encouraging you to see how long you can go without a specific form of short-form content.

For example if you’re a daily TikTok user, are you able to go one week without both using TikTok or replacing it with another, similar form of media?

This is a practice I apply to most things I enjoy. Periodically I’ll take a break for a designated amount of time and evaluate whether my relationship with this thing is healthy.

  • It’ll develop. Whether it should or not eventually Lemmy will develop its own distinct online culture which carries across instances, topics and communities.

I know people will think it won’t have its own particular culture because it’s decentralized etc etc but I remember people saying the same thing about Reddit in like 2011. The smaller community identities either got absorbed into the larger idea of what a “redditor” is or the subs just died.

It’s a little early to say, but Lemmy culture so far has a lot of carryover of Reddit. Which makes sense considering most people here probably used Reddit first. In my experience Lemmy yo-yos between reddit but grumpier and reddit but more conversational. It reminds me a lot of early reddit in that people put more effort into their comments than other places, but also has an air of confident pseudo-intellectualism. There’s no real hivemind yet but there are generally popularized norms.

  • A lot of things do suck, but for me at least it’s important to focus on what actually sucks and what I think sucks because I’m angry at other things.

Having issues with this state of capitalism we’re in is fair, it’s a legitimate problem and affects everyone. Even non-capitalist proponents of capitalism feel the effects, but when they look for the source of their pain their vision gets redirected away from the capitalists.

But feeling frustrated with people bringing their dogs to the park is a waste of your energy. I get this way too, I understand it, but you’re going to wear yourself down.

My unsolicited advice is to try really hard to find something positive to grab onto. Dogs for example. Find a way to enjoy the pure heartedness of dogs and mentally don’t let it touch the problems with humans. Treat it as a sort of pressure release valve when your frustrations with capitalism start to expand in scope, something that you keep simple and straightforward and positive.

That way your anger stays focused.

  • Feel like I could just get away with killing people who are like clinically brain dead and can’t be allowed to die due to religious or legal reasons.

I can barely be trusted with that, but I feel like that’s a limit I could stick to and spend the rest of my time just making sure the book doesn’t get into the wrong hands.

There’s still moral implications to being an angel of death and it could go wrong really easily but it feels much less tricky than deciding some dude fits my personal criteria of evil and thus deserves death.
