The older the internet gets, the more it’s like a city that keeps building on top of its own ruins. What’s is your favorite bit of internet archeology if memes are like artifacts and relics?

I remember, when I was first networking my home computers in 1998 or whatever, someone telling me that coax with the BNC connector wiring was superior to RJ45 with twisted pair cables.

And at that time, it might have been, somehow, but even if that were true: It wasn’t hard to see into the near future and realize that twisted pair was where the tech was going, and investing in coax at that point was going to be a waste of money.

BNC worked fine, but god beware you had two points of failure. Impossible to debug, because one error caused the whole line to go down. so you couldn’t just check every connection until it worked.

And I still don’t want to know how many hours of my life I have wasted, because I thought Windows network explorer wasn’t a buggy mess.

"I can ping your PC but don’t see it in the network explorer, might be something wrong. time for another round of “how fast can win98 be reinstalled” :D

BNC didn’t require a switch or hub though
