At its base, #hipsters in #brooklyn were highly related to white people looking for an ethnic identity.

Not in a racist or white supremacist way (though some like McInness went that way or stopped hiding it), but a means of cultural reaction to both a US that was becoming less white dominated, and the simultaneous fall in living standards of white people. The identity was needed as their future was no longer guaranteed.
