@asklemmy@lemmy.world @asklemmy@lemmy.ml what are the likely impacts of datacenters on water and on energy supply ? Can someone please enlighten me on this ?

Use gray water, and cycle it through an external fan system to cool it down.
You know how a water cooling system works on a PC? Like even an AIO? Like that, but just much bigger.
There are assholes that are throwing money at a bubble and they don’t know shit about computing. Fuck, wasn’t there a data center that got caught for running gas generators?
@expletivedeleted are you from AWS ???
No…
Depends on the implementation. Some data centwrs gobble energy and use fresh water for cooling. Some have been caught using gas generators.
We use graywater, which is freshwater that is then cooled and reused, if ever. So far, we found water cooling to be less effective than open air cooling. Additionally, we build solar farms and battery systems.
We try to keep comsumption to a minimum and our goal is actually to provide toward the grid.
But people like Meta, who felled 250,000 trees illegally, don’t give any fucks about the strain on the grid.
Those are the ones people are upset about.
We have a landscaping fleet who plant trees and flowers and maintain bee farms. We do this to cover the eyesore. We build out in non-residential areas on poor farming land.
God, one site was just a mud pit if it rained. That one was hell to set up, but we finally got grass seeded and it grew in. Man, doing the networking at that site threw my back just walked in the mud. That was miserable.
But other companies are going to failing farmers (failing by design because they are manipulating the government to fail those farmers) and buying their land ONLY to pull from the grid and water resources.
The “big tech” oligarchs are the ones building the data centers that cause power outages and are wasting/polluting the water.
Like, consider a PC with an AIO water cooling system. There is no cap on it for you to add water. That’s just gray water, cooled with fans and heatsinks.
Now, imagine that instead, you hooked your computer to the sink and dumped the water into the toilet. That’s what some are doing.
That is the bullshit people are rightly upset about. If we can do it environmentally, with our limited amounts of money, then they should be able to as well, as they are billionaires.
That’s the issue.
