In the last week I have seen solar punk go down and aussie.zone owner talk about stepping away.
I’ve not seen two places down at once that has made it to my feed in the last 3 years.
Is the self hosting aspect of lemmy a detriment to the entire environment? Admins getting burnt out or the costs becoming too high is absolutely an issue.
I know this is kind of rambling but what would happen to Lemmy if the major hosters all went down, and we all spun up our own personal services?

Is self hosting a problem for Lemmy? Yes and no.
Self hosting for personal or small groups is a great feature. It allows communities to be independently responsible and has a relatively low barrier to entry.
I think Lemmy needs to have a certification process though. People not looking to self-hosting should be guided to instances that have documented availability, backup, recovery, and backend support.
You shouldn’t find out that your instance is running off an single drive in sombody’s mothers basement and they are out of town for 3 months by having problems logging in.
Yes. I think we just need a cultural norm where indie instances proudly proclaim their indie credentials and the associated risks, while large reliable servers share how they are backed up and managed, as well.
The indie instances of today can become the large communities tomorrow.
Most things start small.
Of course this dude has a building at Stanford named after him.
The Nvidia guy?
checks Wikipedia
He got his grad degree at Stanford in 2010, and I bet that he probably donated a bunch of money to the university, probably paid for the thing’s construction. My experience is that it’s not uncommon for people who make it big out of tech universities to donate money to their alma mater, and the university often names something after them.

I’d guess that Nvidia itself might also have donated money:
Yes, I’m well aware that’s how it works.
And in this case become evil but that’s not relevant.
only some clever p2p shinnanigans can save us now
and lemmy.world :)
I recently started donating to my instance to, hopefully, help them keep going. I can host my own instance, but I really don’t want to have to do that. The PHP vulnerabilities are a good example, I spent most of my life having vulnerabilities like that be my problem, but boy was I glad PHP2SHELL was something I watched from the outside.
Agreed. Once you let other people use your services you really need to think about things like nextgen firewalls and SoCaaS.
