I don‘t think it‘s that wild. You could of course compare it to asbestos instead. Another „tool“ in our arsenal of things that are the best in their field but most countries have decided not to use them over other concerns.

For whats worth, Affinity is free and available on Linux. It probably won‘t get new updates at some point but it‘s pretty capable already. So even if it‘s being phased out you could probably take your time with a replacement because it will still be good for a while. But yeah, Canva is definitely not our friend.

I can‘t use the old one anymore because I am on Linux now and the new one isn‘t going away. It may just not getting new updates at some point but it‘s already superior to Affinity 2 in every aspect already. The old Affinity is obsolete.

Pretty much. It‘s a really shitty situation and it would be better if the world decided to not use them and sanction them. A bit like nuclear weapons that are also far more effective than alternatives but too destruktive to seriously consider. For now, many developers are doomed to use LLMs for security reasons. Because LLMs are not just a tool. They are an entire production line at the grasp of your hand. Just using complex architecture to obscure risks doesn‘t cut it anymore.

Why? I bought Affinity but the new version is much better, free and has a full functional Linux version.

It‘s Canva. You shouldn‘t expect anything from them. A free of charge Affinity version is a neat thing but I hope we‘re all aware they bought the company for the same reasons Adobe buys companies. They want to trap users and make money. I‘ll enjoy the free program until something better comes along but I won‘t be Canva‘s loyal customer.

As I understand it this exact application of AI is currently prohibited by the EU.

Pretty sure you can‘t do that in the EU. Your boss is not even allowed to give AI details about you or consult it about you. The thought that Anthropic wants Claude to become your supervisor is deranged and dystopian.

After allegedly reaching AGI for the first time on 6 different occasions nonetheless!

For the same reason Russian Television shouldn‘t be posted here. It is controlled by a genocide commiting dictatorship and known to spread blatant lies. The fact that I have to explain this shows the lack of general media competence in this community.

Sure. Let media outlets owned by the rich fight tech companies owned by other rich people. Doubt it changes anything though.

Why on earth is the most well known Chinese state media website not banned in this community?

Pretty much. I would be happier if we still had hardware from a decade ago with prices from a decade ago than where we‘re at right now. I don‘t feel any enthusiasm for better benchmarks when big tech keeps hoarding all of it anyway.

That‘s my guess too. Anthropic‘s business model was abysmal already but now the IPO looks like a really bad Ponzi scheme that is guaranteed to lose your money.

AI (restrictions) truly were inevitable.

Legislators could just put all blame on consumers, you know? They could make you responsible for each and every generation and declare open weight a threat to national security. This won‘t solve itself in our favor. The oligarchs hold way too much power already.

Uhm yeah good luck with running anything locally after hardware prices double again and again. Big tech needs to be stopped. There is no wiggling out of this just by being a smart customer.

FYI: AirVPN is in Italy and subject to the 14 eyes intelligence-sharing collective. Everything you do with it likely goes straight to Washington and Israel. They have a special interest in collecting data specifically from people who seek to disguise their tracks and use that kind of information to train bots and adjust their propaganda campaigns.

It‘s ridiculous. They claim they actually have a shortage of highly skilled developers and that‘s supposedly why they‘re focusing so hard on vibe coding. But this whole re-interviewing thing would just have made their actual problem of a toxic work environment of fear and shaming even worse. Who would want to work there? Not someone who has the privilege to choose. They needed to get rid of that CEO yesterday.
Who are the customers for such a ridiculous thing?
