I just meant the way the Charles River kinda dips down and makes a little Cambridge nub. Especially because Charlestown and the Airport are technically part of Boston

Cambridge borders Boston, and is basically surrounded on 3 sides by Boston. Harvard is about 5 km from Boston’s downtown, and MIT is about 3 km.

Technology@lemmy.world•The 16GB Raspberry Pi 5 got another ‘unavoidable’ RAM price hikeEnglish
1·3 days agoIt’s true that programs today are several orders of magnitude more capable, but it is also true that code now is hideously RAM inefficient and bloated.
The entire codebase of software in production, yes. But one thing that people might not realize is that some of our software algorithms themselves, at least for certain algorithm families, are also much more efficient than before.
I thought this was an interesting overview:
https://futuretech.mit.edu/publication/how-fast-do-algorithms-improve
The focus isn’t on memory usage, but the same general trend applies there: when someone discovered a new algorithm that improves on old ones, it can change the amount of memory used to accomplish a specific result.
Was curious, so I looked it up.
They started dating in 2013, when he was 44 and she was 19. So she was less than half his age for 6 years of their relationship, and now they’re 57 and 32.
Their kids were born in 2015, 2018, and 2025.

2·4 days agoAnd none of it detracts from the main point, like you were saying. Being rich takes things into another world, to where comparisons to normal budgets don’t really capture the essence of what is going on or how it is being experienced by the rich person.
I chose net worth because I think at around the $100 million mark, realized income in any given year gets fairly meaningless compared to longer term trends, including in unrealized gains/losses in one’s net worth.
But nothing truly captures what it’s like to have money like this. These people treat money like points in a video game.

No, for these types of long tail distributions, the mean is much, much higher than the median. In this case, mean net worth is about $1.25 million, about 6 times larger than the median.

The owner of a valet parking garage might have millions of dollars worth of cars inside, but he can’t just start using that value to pay off his debts, even if he does have the keys to the cars inside.

Median American net worth is $216,000, and 0.05% of that is about $108.

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•Can anyone overthrow Steam on PC? "As long as Valve is independent and not a publicly traded company," analyst says it looks impossibleEnglish
5·8 days agoIn some industries and markets, copycats can come along and undercut the original without actually improving things, but just offering a better price. For whatever reason, nobody else seems to be able to meaningfully compete with Steam on that front, either.

Technology@lemmy.world•OpenAI says it will no longer train its AI models on the live internet, citing 'significant risks' | TechCrunchEnglish
4·9 days agoI don’t think they need to make these announcements public if the target audience is their own developers. I know some Anthropic engineers, and some former OpenAI engineers, and from our conversations it sounds like both companies do rely on internal messaging to manage workplace morale and address concerns. And warn them about honeypot spies looking for secrets, apparently.
So maybe this message is mainly for regulators and investors, not necessarily their current employees.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•do you think that lemmy needs to have a different culture than reddit?
4·11 days agoThere are a million little slices of each site/service, where the culture in that particular community or thread or specific comment chain can differ from somewhere else.
So I would say that no, we shouldn’t make the fediverse a monoculture. And with that diversity within the fediverse, we can say that some parts will be similar to some parts of reddit, and some parts won’t. And some parts won’t be similar to some other parts of the same instance.

It frustrates me to see that people are suddenly protective of some kind of intellectual property right of people to control creations after they’ve been created.
I’m pretty skeptical of AI and have my doubts that it will be a net good, but I’m definitely not gonna suddenly be pro-copyright as part of that fight. Copyright has traditionally been used to entrench corporate interests, and strengthening those protections isn’t going to suddenly win a fight against some kind of AI dystopia.

1·1 month agoNot exactly, the bootpicker just won’t show partitions that are not flagged as bootable. This is a departure from previous versions, that would check to see whether partitions were bootable without looking at the flag, and took a little bit of investigating to figure out this undocumented behavior, but it is an easy fix:

Exactly. Cooling a maritime vessel is easy, because the ocean is a giant heatsink. The heat capacity of water is so far above almost any other common material, and water is plentiful in the ocean.
Put the fresh water in a closed loop and let salt water carry the heat away from some kind of heat exchanger.
