Linux@lemmy.ml•Killed by Ubuntu, Linux Mint is Bringing This Classic Feature Back
4·5 days agoLinux S2deep killed my laptop battery after only a year of use and I had to get a new one.
Either it dies in my backpack within hours or I just don’t use my laptop within the next 24 hours and it goes flat.
I had to install Windows on that thing because I would always open it to find it dead.

Technology@lemmy.world•After Uber Destroyed Taxi Cabs, Drivers Now Face the Existential Threat of Self-Driving Cars: "It feels like every time I adjust to a new reality, another tech comes along & threatens my livelihood."English
2·7 days agoTo be fair, I’ve never stepped into a Waymo, but from what I’ve heard they’re sent on pre-determined paths around a delimited area. These only seem to be feasible you can either strictly control your environment or adjust for a finite number of cases, such as a delimited area, and even that isn’t working too hot for other road users.
I still don’t see the advantage versus a taxi bus.

Technology@lemmy.world•After Uber Destroyed Taxi Cabs, Drivers Now Face the Existential Threat of Self-Driving Cars: "It feels like every time I adjust to a new reality, another tech comes along & threatens my livelihood."English
112·8 days agoThe entire rhetoric relies on the idea that self driving road cars are
- Feasible
- Desirable over rail or bus
Tesla’s failed efforts have proven time and time again that the road is full of unexpected and arbitrary inaccuracies, ambiguities and risks that cannot be assessed by a machine alone. They’ve also been sued in multiple markets on claims of false advertising because autopilot is not, in fact, autopilot.
They don’t even have the best system in the industry, that would be Drive Pilot, a Level 3 autonomous assist system by Mercedes-Benz. The only systems to have level 4 are taxis that only operate in limited areas, on limited, known routes, and they are well known for being very easily confused and blocking emergency vehicles.

141·8 days agoYeah it’s called a rail. We inexplicably paved over them in the 60’s.
I get a glimpse of what once was every time they tear open the road. :(
Definitely a “holding it wrong” or “you’re using Fedora” type of problem.
I really like systemd’s user services.

2·12 days agoWhat the fuck is a custom domain?
You mean a domain name?
I’m being asinine here, but there’s nothing special about a “”“custom domain”“”. It’s a domain name you bought.

212·13 days agoOh it’s already easy. You start asking the submitter to explain the code. Sometimes it’s just visually obvious, too.
I’ve always had the opinion of it not being slop if you:
- Take ownership and fully understand the code
- Make it look like a human wrote it, in other words, scrutinize, re-factor and re-format the code for legibility, performance and maintainability before submitting your patch
This effectively forces you to do research to properly understand how your patch is implemented and puts you through the mental exercise of cleaning up the code. It also more often than not mostly replaces the code the LLM generated anyway, making it yours.
I say all this as someone who turns around a lot of PRs at work for being slop. Come back to me when you can take ownership of your git blame.

No lmao we do this to run from our software optimization problems. It’s not gonna get better seeing the way people use LLMs to write code.
