Technology@lemmy.world•In China, the AI bubble has already burstEnglish
5·2 days agoThe punishment is having a bad monetary credit score. Like with credit score all over the world. There’s nothing more sinister about the Chinese system than anywhere else, where credit scores are a thing. Granted, credit scores, especially for private persons, are pretty sinister in the first place.
What let to this misconception about social credit in China is that there were people suggesting to extend it to more general behavior. You can find people everywhere suggesting crazy shit. Like just this week a part of the conservative party in Germany suggested using the army against protests, but nobody is drawing the conclusion that Germany is preparing Tiananmen 2.0 in the capital. It was lunatics suggesting it anyway.

71·2 days agoCheck up on the social credit score
There have been widespread misconceptions in media reports about a unified social credit “score” based on individuals’ behavior, leading to punishments if the score is too low or rewards if the score is high.

Steam Hardware@sopuli.xyz•[Discussion] What was the first Steam game you ever purchased?
2·2 days agoThat reminds me 😅. Dad bought me Settlers II for Macintosh back in the day (first game on CD-ROM, whoa).
It needed 16 MB of RAM, but I had only 8…but there was this thing in MacOS 7 called “virtual memory”, which is just swap.
I did not understand it, so obviously I was like “what is this shit? Why can I just have RAM, but need to activate it?” So of course I cranked it up to a whooping 32 MB, Hackerman that I was.
Game ran like shit, but it ran. There was a button to skip some time ahead, idk, like 30 seconds. Took longer than those 30 seconds to skip ahead with my shitty HDD RAM 😅. And I thought “what a shitty button, does not make sense at all, wtf is this?”

Given I clocked some 500ish hours it seems like a good deal.

World News@lemmy.world•China closes 3 Tibetan schools in 3 months; threatens language, cultural preservationEnglish
33·3 days agoYeah, because Russia will immediately cease to threaten the Baltics, if they have eradicated the Russian language in some 6-8 generations.
Go read about Karelia for gods sakes.
Nowhere did I say that it is good when e.g. Russia does it?!
It’s strange, because it’s just so incompatible with how I feel. Like, I have higher standars for my friends and me than for strangers, but in politics it’s the other way round, where friends and allies can do whatever and are never called out.

55·3 days agoYes, they did. And today those are free states. Which now punish their Russian (Russian speaking, mind you) minorities.
Look, I don’t even care that much whether some states decide to suppress languages of their minorities. I care about the messaging. If the virtue signalling is “it is bad to try to suppress language and culture of a minority in the state school system”, I can get behind that. But it needs to be a universal concept, then. Especially around our allies. Like, of course China is doing evil shit, I don’t expect them to do stuff differently. But I expect my allies and friends to do better.
I’ll never understand in these kind of discussions how that concept of using the same scope is difficult, but here we are ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

35·3 days agoWait, the other day I read over in c/Europe it’s perfectly fine for Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia to suppress the Russian language for their Russian minorities in their schools.
So, in the end it’s not about any freedom values whatsoever, but about whether it’s against our enemies? Shocking.

Well, for once if it wasn’t published everybody could’ve just said “We didn’t know about what Hitler would do”…wait
