I have done the rim joists in my basement using a similar spray foam product. The biggest recommendations I have are:

1. Use the kind of gun pictured and not the cans that come with a straw. It is much easier to apply consistently and you can actually stop work and start again the next day using the same can. The straws work OK but they always get clogged when you stop for a bit so only use them if you are working on a small area and plan on using the whole can in one go.

2. Look into the difference between closed cell and open cell foam. I’ve never seen closed cell come in a can like that so I’d bet money that is open cell foam. It works great for air sealing but you need to apply a ton of it to get an appreciable R-value. Closed cell foam is a lot more expensive in the spray form and is a 2 part mixture that is more complicated to work with.

What I ended up doing was buying some 2" closed cell foam board at the local hardware store. It’s relatively cheap in board form and is easy to cut. I cut a piece of the foam board to fit inside the rim joist space and then used the spray foam to air seal both the rim joists themselves and the small gap around the foam board. I think this is the most effective way to do it unless you go for the 2 part closed cell spray foam but that was more than triple the cost of the foam board + open cell spray foam.

For comparison, the 2" foam board has an R-value around 8 and, if memory serves, you would need something like 8" of open cell foam to provide that same level of insulation. You can get an equivalent R-value with 2" of the closed cell spray foam but last I checked the spray stuff was about $800 and an 8’x4’ sheet of 2" foam board is around $60.

I don’t have enough space for a horizontal loop so I had to go vertical. The pipes are not PEX exactly but a similar flexible plastic material. Probably 2” diameter. It was pretty expensive but partly because I live in a cold climate. I was already looking at swapping from a gas furnace to an air source heat pump but the heat pumps that function in cold weather are pretty expensive.

I was going to have to get a new AC unit as well. I also ended up going with a unit that has a desuperheater for hot water. Once you add up costs for a new furnace, AC, and hot water, then subtract the 30% federal tax credit from the cost of the geothermal install it wasn’t as much of a difference as I would have guessed.

All that to say, our situations are different but if you have space for a horizontal loop and a relatively small house I think you could make it work with a repurposed heat pump and some manual labor. I definitely would have considered that if I had more land to work with.

Yeah that’s a good call. I don’t push back when asked directly I just pretend I didn’t see the emails. Most of the time it’s fine but the boring security stuff is usually the one they get me on.

I think they do that at my company too but in addition to not reporting phishing emails I have a personal rule that I don’t do any “mandatory” training unless someone in my management chain specifically asks me to. My boss probably gets annoyed by that occasionally but you’d be surprised how much of that stuff I never get asked about.

My company sends at least one fake phishing email a week. They track stats for them on a security page and I wear it as a badge of honor that my report says 100% viewed and 0% reported.

Maybe in his mind there’s a significant difference between a shithole and a shithouse? I don’t want to subject myself to the insanity of trying to parse his irrational thoughts any further though.

To preface, I haven’t heard a word he’s said in more than 10 years so he may be completely different now for all I know, but I do think people like him serve an important role in the political evolution of those crossing over from conservative to progressive. People don’t generally make that kind of ideological jump overnight. Maher is (or was) a kind of mid-point on that journey. A place for people to get comfortable with rejecting the ideas they grew up with before they fully develop their own thoughts.

I don’t think you’ll know for sure unless you ask, and even then there’s no guarantee you’ll get a real answer.

People are all unique. Just read these responses here. There are people making contradictory claims because each one is focusing on different parts of the story from different perspectives. That’s not an indictment on their judgement it’s an illustration of the reality you’re facing.

The truth is none of us know what you did or didn’t do wrong, or if there even was such a thing. We don’t have enough information and I don’t think you could provide all the necessary information even if you wanted to. Social interactions are just too complex to be accurately deconstructed in a few paragraphs.

In the end, just think about what you want and take a step in that direction. If you want to see this guy again, say that to him. It doesn’t have to be more complicated than that as long as you’re willing to accept that it might not turn out the way you want.

In this same post he refers to Mike Johnson by a name that I’ve never heard attributed to him before and is not the name he uses in his official capacity as Speaker of the House. Is he trying to say that any deviation from a legal or previous name is not acceptable? If so, why would he draw attention to a different form of the Speaker’s name in the same sentence? This feels like trolling but I think it’s just idiocy.

As I wrote it I realized that last sentence might be the most succinct description of the Trump era I’ve ever seen.
