ha, replace ai in this with any other generic tool and the idiocy of the premise is revealed
If it was literally impossible to make any profit off a hammer, how do you think things would look like now?
old, stupid

exactly. it (your server) is limited to what the users of that server have subscribed to. but many places are using federating bots to fill this gap… no idea if your home base (lemmy.ml) is or not

it does not search across instances, it only searches its local database copies of instance data it has already receieved.
ie, if theres some server that no lemmy.world user has subscribed to, then no lemmy.world user could search that servers content without an exact link.

my instance auto-subscribes to all external communities via a federating bot. this allows my servers ‘/all/new’ queue to be filled with shit my personal account is not subscribed to, and thats how i see new communities to subscribe to.
but thats my local mbin instance… not sure what lemmings do

yeah, but then you have to use lemmy which has almost zero microblog interaction… my other deciding factor

this will never get old until he wins

what a see-you-next-tuesday
why cant she just crawl under a rock and stfu already

yeah, not sure what to tell you… theres just no warning when your instance is run by shit heads.
you could go check https://fedidb.com/servers for places to test.
theres some open servers minimal on de-federation that have been around for awhile… i would call these ‘on-ramp’ servers… they host little locally-created content, but users can interface with the rest of the verse freely… mine is one of those.
cept im not using lemmy. lemmy is kinda fugly imho. i wanted a more contemporary old.reddit
80 or less?
anything? hell, a piece of paper will last less than 80 years

I’m on my fifth account and not bc I’m choosy but bc every instance I’ve joined has shuttered.
theres another big problem… funding and administration. anyone can throw a federating server up… it takes some work to make it (and keep it) reliable

i mean how can you downvote this. the best kind of correct is technically.

we havent solved the ‘new user’ -> instance’ problem
its hard to explain to people the concept that the server you login to is just the home base of an entire network. explaining the dance of instance interoperability immediately tunes out potential new users.
the fediverse isnt really open to newcomers… they tend to land on the big ones like .world and then slowly warm up to the idea theyre communicating with many remote servers… if they stick around

almost like its just a reflection of a general sample of humanity than any given platform.
weird how that happens… turns out; humans just suck
yes, youre correct about the single ‘ism’ and how its failure is at its root cause human greed.
but again, a complete waste of time here as it has zero to do with my point other than being a single pebble on a beach.
your fixation should worry you. i hope you dont let your very obvious obsession with capitalism define you.
so freakin dense.
the failure of every freakin ‘ism’ that exists, that has ever existed has at its root cause; human greed not able to constrained to the rules of the system. im referring to a raw human trait. a fucking personality defect. not a specific implementation, such as the single one you guys are all entirely fixated on, capitalism.
does it suck? yep. so do ALL OF THEM, becuase human greed inevitably fucks it , all… up.
but go ahead and keep railing how special captialism is for some reason, but jesus go open a new thread about it… cuz youre out of context here
i think youre operating from out of context for the thread.
i feel op is lookin for root cause not implemented root cause, but clearly you have your own agenda.
youre just adding layers that dont need to exist. “capitalism” is a logical construct of human activity. i dont see a reason to extrapolate in the one of a thousand ways humans suck… “capitalism”? how random.
i chose it over lemmy because lemmy had minimial interfaces (at the time), and i wanted a reddit clone. i also specifically wanted to follow some mastodon/universeodon peeps which lemmy is of course incapable of. i liked that theres built in karma. oops, i mean “reputation points”.
it just looks/feels more polished
the microblogging side is definitely weaker, but it does function. i can check my subscribed microblogs and they show in my feed as expected. ive sent/received messages in those directions.
the mbin dev crew have also been really cool guys to work with, the dev team of mbin is an open commune of sorts… anyone can help.
that said… i would say mbin is a little bit process-heavy/bulky for single user… but you could tweak it for your use… i know several that do.
it is a server application requiring some knowledge to successfully setup and maintain. its a lot of i/o
