It is, but I’m guessing they know pretty accurately how many will actually take the deal, like 20k or something. Still an insane number, an entire town leaving.

Personally I like Sable, it feels closer to Discord, has call support, and “just works”

It is, but I’ll honestly give Microsoft credit here. I have several friends who work there who are nearing retirement, and this is honestly the best way to do it. You leave with dignity, you get a fat check, and you get to retire early. I have a couple who have done it already. Honestly, as far as layoffs go, it’s the best way to do it.
The only gotcha is if you choose to stay you officially know you’re on notice, you probably shouldn’t trust it. If you don’t take it then tomorrow you could be shown the door with a minimal severance, or no severance at all.

You can make it 500 and it still isn’t that economic “boom” that big tech promises.

You’re talking in terms of an individual. 50 people is not bringing a lot of jobs to an economy and not worth giving tax breaks to. To a town of 5000 it would be 1% of the population working there, maybe 2% with electricians as you say. Politicians think it’s like their corporate headquarters where thousands of people will be working there

Datacenters do not bring jobs or tax income! I scream into a room of people who do already know that but it breaks my heart seeing the damage done there.
They bring massive land, energy, and water use, and are manned by only a skeleton crew of tech workers, even a small town wouldn’t notice a bump in population or revenue.
Leaders who approve them are either too naive and stupid by not understanding this (and thus should be voted out) or they are corrupt and accepting bribes (and should be kicked out or minimum voted out)

Phew to think how close it is to my private key
Cosmic desktop has been neat but it definitely needed more time to bake before hitting the general release. Just last weekend I did an update that dropped me to the emergency terminal and took half a day to repair. Pop was my go to “it just works” but right now I can’t in good consciousness recommend it for average users, especially gamers. Hell I still have to drop to gnome to play half my games, and the other half usually have visual bugs that I’ve tinkered with for ages. I’m sure it will stabilize, but they should have kept it on the beta branch for longer.
