  • “Bit off more than you could chew, eh? Still, I like your gumption. I could use a man of your talents… And perhaps you could use a bit of ‘job security’, once you’re out of here. ‘Who’s asking’? Well, son, you’re looking at the mastermind behind the Great Maple Syrup Heist. That’s right. It was almost perfect, but as you can see, things got sticky in the end. But this next job will be different. You got your start stealing candy from babies, just like everybody else, didn’t you? Well, imagine stealing the candy before the baby even got it! Uh huh. So… I may or may not have come into possession of reliable intel about the Easter Bunny’s secret stash… We’re talking enough chocolate here to make each of us billionaires, once it’s melted down, and minted into fresh, clean, completely untraceable chocolate coins. So, what do you say… are you in?”

  • Lula has been mired in corruption charges out the wazoo. Now, it turns out that at least some of them were a result of a corrupt, right-wing judiciary colluding against him, so his initial conviction was rightly overturned. But he was facing a lot of charges, and they were not necessarily all made up. Regardless, they were all swept away, just like that, meaning he has neither been found guilty or innocent of most of the charges of corruption against him.

Among all the people in as populous a country as Brazil, you’d think you’d be able to find a better candidate than an unpopular geriatric, who, rightly so or not, has had an incredulous amount of accusations of corruption against him.

But even if Lula was the second-worst possible candidate in all of Brazil, he is still many, many orders of magnitude better than the candidate he ultimately ran and won against. There’s no comparison.

  • At this point, I don’t see why that is any worse than using the services of any US-based Big Tech companies. They have the same kind of anti-privacy business model, their local political regimes have both gone off the rails, and law enforcement and intelligence agencies can legally or extra-judicially snoop through collected data without the user ever knowing.

Some of the services provided by Yandex are, quality-wise, decent enough. I personally tend to find their translation service to be as good or better, as compared to similar services, such as Google Translate or DeepL, so it’s usually my API of choice through Mohzi.

  • Well, not being one of the absolutely worst imaginable, doesn’t make you good by default. Lula is not a good candidate - it just so happens that Bolsonaro is incomparably much, much worse. It speaks to the state of the Brazilian political system that, with millions and millions of people that could potentially have been candidates, it’s still these two that turn up as the two “best options” from the political process.

It’s a moot point now, because Lula doesn’t really stand a snowman’s chance in hell of winning this election. But you could argue that he, and PT, threw this one. I don’t think it’s far fetched, anyway, to say that a better candidate could have won this election.
