It means that the government should fund healthcare, and have no place in the treatment of any individual. That is a conversation between doctors and patients

131·1 day agoI don’t get what you expect us to do. We’re protesting constantly, we’re organizing politically (very successfully it seems like, we’ll find out in a few weeks), we’re destroying flock cameras and physically driving out ICE from our communities. Hell, there’s even been a steady stream of assassination attempts.
We’re the furthest along, but this infection is global. Billionaires have taken control of our government and media, and we’re trying to regain control. It’s not an easy process.
And money is global, do when you face the same battle I’ll be supportive

1·2 days agoWhat exactly is a continental identity? People have a cultural and a national identity, sometimes a regional identity, no one has a continental identity
Europeans kind of do, but it’s nowhere close to the continent of Europe, is it? The continent was named after a group of countries with a close history and a large concentration of colonial powers. The term refers to people of a region, it has nothing to do with continents no matter what taxonomy you want to use
More importantly, how is this at all useful? What concerns do you think North and South Americans share? How do you talk about the people on that half of the planet in a way that doesn’t minimize the interests of the majority of countries there? Time zones?
At the end of the day, it’s offensive to project a label and identity on other people. It’s infantilizing

1·2 days ago… Wow. I think every bit of that was objectively wrong, except maybe the thing where it becomes obvious in person? I couldn’t make heads or tails of that part.
But the fact that you said “Asian people” instead of “Asians” proves my point
You apparently know it’s offensive… But you still seem to think it’s offensive to Americans. It’s not, it’s offensive to everyone else on that half of the planet (which is what a hemisphere is, no matter how you draw the lines)
On that note, you really should spend a few minutes with a globe…

361·2 days agoAs much as I would normally hate something like this, the way so many projects are based on discord (and how unsearchable discord messages are) make this really convenient
Probably the worst solution, but maybe it’ll also get people off discord?

1·3 days agoLLMs are really good at language, it’s their whole thing. If you tell them to make spelling errors, they’ll do it just as easily as they can copy the tone and cadence of MLK or Trump speeches
Also, please no, I’m so bad at spelling

1·3 days agoThe reason no one does it in person is because they would be swiftly corrected.
In fact, no one actually uses it on the Internet because no one would know what you mean… It’s just a meme argument that probably originated from 4chan
It’s literally the same as calling all Asian people Chinese. You can’t just pick the biggest country in a region (let alone an entire hemisphere) and fold everyone there under their label…No matter what Internet logic you use to justify it, it’s still offensive to everyone involved

1·4 days agoVoting only works if people get involved long before election day. In many places, your vote literally doesn’t matter
But even if you’re just chipping away at a mountain, getting involved will only increase the influence you have over the process

162·4 days agoNo one but those from the US claim the term “American”. Canadians do not want to be called American, and everyone else speaks a whole different language, and they prefer to be referred to by their county as well
It’s not US defaultism, it’s like calling someone from China Asian, or worse Oriental. It’s not woke, no one will thank you for calling them by a label you’ve assigned to them as an outsider

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•You’ve been tasked with defining a new area of criminal law called “economic and financial violence,” and creating laws to prevent it. What actions would you try to criminalize?English
2·7 days agoAt $35k a week, you could have a dozen employees, easy. Rich people don’t usually tend to pay nearly as well as one would think
Plus, the company that is a billionaire is getting possessed by our department, it’s part of their wealth, and the jobs go with it… Security can run security, housekeeping and maintenance will work the properties, even cooks and nutritionists can float between our special guy/gal properties the way they do now, just following a schedule instead of their billionaire. Their finance people can apply to join the department, although they’d probably not be a good “culture fit”
They’re free to hire a few people as bodyguards or an entourage if they want. It’s their stipend
The whole idea here is to distract these people so they don’t destroy the world. Taxing the shit out of them is all well and good, but they’re always going to try to exploit the rules and lobby politicians. It’ll be an endless flight - we ended up here in a century, we’ll end up here again
Instead, we turn it into a prestigious thing and give them new games to play, new ways to flex on each other that doesn’t use the rest of us as a game board.
If some servants of billionaires end up out of a job? Sorry, enjoy having a working social safety net while you job hunt. Enjoy a flourishing job market now that the velocity of money is no longer hampered by dragon hoards
Or hell, with the insane assets billionaires have, we could pay their wages for life and barely touch the bottom line

2·8 days agoIf you at any time hold assets more than, let’s say $250 million, all of your property is seized and you get a iridescent credit card that says “I won capitalism”. You can use it for $5k a day (growth linked to minimum wage) to do anything, and we’d offer a concierge service to rent mansions or yachts through a point system
My department would then be concerned with handling their investments to fund the program and reinvest what’s left over in the form of grants (mostly to start and run small businesses with no repayment if certain metrics are met)
But mostly we’d be game masters. We’d keep the capitalism winners busy competing for prestigious (but meaningless) prizes. They want to fly people in for a party? You can pay their way with points to flex. You want to shake hands with the president? We’ll run a point auction occasionally and have award ceremonies for the special winners
Otherwise, they can use the money however they want. They can play the games and compete with their “peers”, or they could fuck off and live like a big shot…5k a day is a lot of money. And we’re happy for them to use it, they can buy things and donate their remainder to anyone they want. They could let their entire family live in comfort and safety
But if they ever touch money, literally or figuratively, or fail to register into the system, they lose their freedom and are forced into our little summer camp games for a length of time determined by the offense
Silly as it sounds, we’d be literally saving the world

Not but, it’s and
Their ad revenue plummeted, because the AI summary costs money each search and also leads to fewer clicks (because people often take the AI answer), meaning Google ads, the core of their business, are not being seen on web sites
Also, they continue to invest crazy amounts in AI data centers (despite being significantly behind in LLM quality)
But that’s really just a piece of the puzzle, the simple answer is they are not only going all in on AI, they’re also destroying the one massive profit center that keeps all their other projects afloat
You love to see it
