  • Does anyone else find it a little bit unsettling that theres a daily push to get americans to just go ham with machine guns?

The weird thing is its nearly impossible to work out where its coming from. Anti-gun americans trying to push it so they get regulated? Pro-fascists looking for excuses to enact martial law? Hostile foreign powers trying to capitalise on disruption and sow chaos? Well intentioned foreign citizens? People who just want to watch the world burn? The list goes on.

  • I’m not sure I’d like having a portal gun. I want one. I really want one. I just think life would kinda feel either pointless or overly complicated.

With only one of you with your regular human brain you’d be unable to save the entire world so any good you achieve would feel depressingly underwhelming, like the ending of schindlers list. Also you’d likely fall for a bad guys story and think you’re doing good but actually making shit worse.

If you manage to just be selfish with it and keep it quiet, what would you even do with life? Once you’d done all the landmarks, snuck onto area 51 and shit, what’s left? Doesn’t seem much point working a job, keeping a house or even robbing banks or whatever. Why bother with money when you’ve got a portal gun?

I really want it. But I must never have it.

  • The time that has been saved by the washing machine meant more time to join the workforce meaning 2 income households can now provide the same level of value as 1 income households used to. Except they cant. Also its more than simply the washing machine.

The point was that the extra time has not been given to us, but allowed to be taken by the rich.

Edit : yes time has been saved. Its not actually properly benefitted us in the way you’d imagine though.

  • Its difficult to put more clearly than he already did, so I’ll come at it from a different angle, see if that’s any better.

You’re at a factory on a machine that takes 10 people to operate it. You all get minimum wage. A new machine comes out that only takes 5 people to work it for the same output. That should be great, but for the worker it sucks. 5 people now have jobs and 5 people are unemployed. The people still working are still on minimum wage.

The salaries that are “saved” go mostly in the bosses pockets. Sure some goes to the manufacturer of the better machine, and some goes on taxes, but mostly it’s value that we, the common man, has lost.

If it works out like they’re hoping, AI will do this at a scale we’ve never encountered before.
