politics @lemmy.world•New poll upends narrative that Democratic voters are split on El-Sayed
8·1 day agoThe Democratic “rift” is between the leadership and the voters. Islamophobia doesn’t play with Democratic voters like it does with Republicans.

That must be so hard. Those women and prosecutors are doing this horrible thing to him against his will.
That’s enough for a whole Twitter plus a little left over to buy a congressman.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is a piece of media that literally changed the world/had a real world impact?
32·2 days agoThe first Federal laws against hacking and computer crimes was a direct reaction to the movie War Games (1983).
From Wikipedia:
President Ronald Reagan, a family friend of Lasker’s, watched the film and discussed the plot with members of Congress, his advisers, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Reagan ordered a full national security review. Within a week, the Joint Chiefs of Staff returned an answer: “Yes, the premise was technically possible”. Reagan’s interest in the film is credited with leading to the enactment 18 months later of NSDD-145, the first Presidential directive on computer security.

92·2 days agoI’m skeptical that empires have stages and supposing existing empires will obey these stages is dubious. Previous efforts to suss out patterns in history for the purpose of predicting the future have not gone well.

32·3 days agoWhy hasn’t the US been doing this already? Any country that’s not developing these skills are fools. Even if you don’t use them aggressively, the knowledge will come in handy when Russia or China trys to do it to you.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•do you think that brainrot can be fixed and if so how?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How do you read and proces ToS and other legal bits from all different online services?
14·4 days agoBe careful about using AI to summarize a TOS. Some companies have been caught adding hidden prompts to steer your AI from telling you about parts of their TOS that they don’t want you to know about. Regulatory information that they’re required to disclose for example.
I saw a person argue that this really makes the Markle family look bad; as if unworthy of royalty. Someone quickly reminded this British
racistpatriot that this is actually something the Markles and Windsors have in common.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Optimists of Lemmy, what gives you hope about the future?
81·4 days agoNothing humans have ever done is unprecedented or even the worst example in nature. Chaining the atmosphere and causing climate change and mass extinction? Cyanobacteria laugh at humans.
Think plastic is bad? Early trees evolved millions of years before any bacteria or fungi could digest them. Early trees didn’t rot, and they covered the land; clogged the rivers and oceans; and led to continent-wide wildfires. (they also sequestered so much carbon it caused an ice age).
Even what we do to each other isn’t close to the worst examples in nature. Male bedbugs have a reproductive strategy called “traumatic insemination” wherein their stinger-like penis can just stab the female any where on her body. The females have a 25% higher mortality due to being stab-raped.

Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•Man Dies After Being Mowed Down by Self-Driving Tesla, Police SayEnglish
41·5 days agoObviously “self-driving” screwed up here, but crossing the freeway at 2:30AM is pretty suicidal when you’re not 71 years old. A competent robot may be able to react to obstacles at that speed (70MPH/ 110kph), but humans can’t.
It’s just capitalism and econ101 duct-taped and stapled to utilitarianism. Jeremy Bentham is crying.
It’s for psychopath tech bros who’ve got spiders in their brainz.
For example, imagine a myopic billionaire who imagines himself “saving” humanity. If his contributions happen to cause suffering to people alive today, so what? He’s saving “trillions” of people, just in the future. Obviously this means that of all people alive, this billionaire is the only one who really matters. Certainly not Ukrainians who die because he turned off their battlefield communication… hypothetically.

News@lemmy.world•New Trump rule allows hunters to bait bears in Alaska with doughnuts, bacon and more
1·5 days agoBig hunter guys need to bait bears into their camp site because walking around in the woods is scary and hard. They probably hire someone to collect and process the carcass for them; I’ll bet they’re in and out of bear habitat in a couple of hours. They probably don’t even have to carry the rifle themselves.
All to make gun-brained dentists and chiropractors feel like they hunted a bear.

Technology@lemmy.world•Here’s where the last RTX 5090 cards are going: Massive AI conversion factory exposed in China, Founders Edition includedEnglish
9·5 days agoWhy is everyone so obsessed with the 5090? It was always a luxury item. The real tragedy are the cards that used to be between $150-$350, you know, the ones people actually buy to play games with. That was the GPU market. For the first time I can remember “build a PC to save money” is bad advice. And it’s sad for the hobby.
