For nearly a year, immigration authorities have detained and sought to deport a mentally ill man whose mother, lawyers and public records say was born in the United States and not Jamaica as he claims, a review by The Associated Press found.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement has no authority to detain U.S. citizens, but has long done so, usually for hours or days, when officers mistake identities or can’t immediately verify citizenship. Immigration lawyers say a nearly 10-month improper detention would be rare but not unprecedented.
The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, disputes that the man is a U.S. citizen and alleges, without providing evidence, that the birth certificate he submitted to obtain a U.S. passport that he held for 15 years was fraudulent. But AP’s review found documents that support claims by his mother and legal team that he was born in Florida and therefore not subject to ICE’s authority.
“rare, but not unprecedented”
What the actual fuck?!?!
“Yeah we admit we have no legal authority over you for anything, but fuck you and your life, stay in that for profit torture camp.”
To reiterate your point, ICE “has no authority to detain U.S. citizens, but has long done so, usually for hours or days, when officers mistake identities or can’t immediately verify citizenship.”
10 months for this man, apparently for no other reason than because he suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, and as a result of a “deeply entrenched delusional belief system,” claims he was born in Jamaica. The amount of time and money, not to mention suffering, spent on this useless pursuit is disgraceful.
Every single person that has worked a single minute at any ICE Concentration Camp should serve a significant prison sentence. Even the lowliest functionary needs to serve a few years in prison, with those in supervisory positions getting life sentences, and possibly the death penalty if their behavior warrants it. In the future, when the subject of Concentration Camps comes up again, we need people to think “I’m never getting involved in that.”
Literally EVERY person that has worked at a Concentration Camp needs a prison sentence. No mercy.
I agree wholeheartedly. I also call them concentration camps in day to day life and I think phrasing it that way helps it click with some people. There will be financial records so every single person getting an ICE paycheck will be tracked down.
This is their M.O.
No matter what legitimate documents you have, ICE will call it all fake and detain you anyway.
detained or trafficked? it’s almost interchangeable
I usually think of trafficked being the successful moving of the victim to an endpoint like whatever shady ass nation takes in their victims they deport, like sex traffickers sending their sex slaves somewhere permanently. So in this case I think it’s fair to call him a torture slave or abuse slave in the middle of being trafficked between concentration camps to avoid having to release him back where they know he belongs, in fear that even sending him abroad would be too much for the receiving nation to handle or take on as kidnapping an American born citizen can lead to very very bad political outcomes.
