These two were adopted about a month apart, they were both around 3-4 months when adopted. They used to play a lot together. Now they are both over 9 and grumpy.

The dog, Furiosa, she was adopted early July 2017, at 2 months of age.

The cat, Daisy, he was adopted about a month and a half later at 3-4 months of age.

They get along, they used to get along a lot better when they were younger. Daisy pokes Furiosa in the face, especially now that she is in a cone while recovering from knee surgery. But even without that Daisy will wake Furiosa for no apparent reason while she is trying to nap.

“Hey. Hey. Hey. Hey. Hey. Hey. Hey. Are you awake? Fuck you.”

OH NO NOT FURIOSA! She looks absolutely lethal! They both do!

(I think Daisy is the more lethal one)

The cat has had cataracts all his life. They have gotten worse over 9 years. He has always been a very up in your face cuddly cat, I think because of the cataracts and being unable to see from a distance. He also fights with the younger cats a lot.

The dog now lives with a lot of cats, the youngest is a little over 2 and was borderline feral when I rescued him. He wakes up choosing violence. Because of him and all the other cats getting in her face, she has a short temper with them all. She is overall very gentle, but when they poke her face, or bat at her tail she snaps at them.

I mean as we grow older we earn the right to yell at all the damn things that aren’t as they should be, it just comes with age you know. Also, damn young cats, they don’t know how good they have it! It used to be peaceful before they came around!

Not having any of that shit. I can respect that too. Imagine living together with seven cats half your size, you’d be pissed off a lot too. XD

Love that you shared this story with me, thank you! <3

Conversely, I fostered a 2 year old dog, Gizmo, who raised a 4 week old kitten, Jethro, my son rescued. They were so tight, Gizmo would toss Jethro around like a rag doll. Jethro would come back for more! Gizmo was known to carry Jethro around the house by his head in her mouth.

We found a forever home for Gizmo almost 2 years ago. Jethro still sleeps on Gizmo’s spot on the couch.

Gizmo now lives with 1 grumpy old cat who gives her wide berth, 3 sibling cats, their mom, and a kitten. She gets along fantastic with all but the old one.

I have no idea what Gizmo’s life as a puppy was like, but when I rescued her at about 2 she was pregnant (likely with coyote pups), had been poisoned (unsure if intentionally or from her eating rodents who had been poisoned), was anemic, and had canine ehrlichia. I found her abandoned at the Rio Grande near where I walk Furiosa.

I think raising a cat and dog together is going to improve their chances of getting along, but not assure it.

After i rescued Gizmo there was a coyote who would follow us, he would stay in the edge of our sight for the most part. But some days he would make himself known. Gizmo was always excited to see him, and oddly his presence did not upset the other two dogs. I think he was the father of the pups.

I named him Jose Chavez y Chavez after Lou Diamond Phillips’ character in Young Guns.

As for the puppies, i sadly had to make the decision to terminate the pregnancy. Gizmo was so sick she could barely stand. Had she not been poisoned, anemic, and had canine ehrlichia she would have been fine and I would have had to deal with 6 coydogs.
