I share your opinion about trans people. I have known and had pleasant, and unpleasant interactions with trans folks… they are just people. They are not angels or demons.

However, folks tell me that means I hate them, both IRL and on here. If I’m not for the erasure of heternormativity I’m anti-trans, according to these types of folks. And I notice that most folks who think this way… are not trans themselves, they are self appointed ‘activists’ who think you are either with them, or against them. and if you don’t identify yourself with your pronouns you are against them.

There seems a vocal bunch on the internet that doesn’t seem to realize that trans people are a minority and spend too much time insulting straight people. This isn’t all trans people though.

The trans people I know irl aren’t policing language or flying off the handle if you accidentally misgender them. They just want to live as they want. A true patriot will support their countryfolk’s right to do so. ;)

I was having a fire with my buddy a couple years back, early in his transition, and accidentally misgendered him. I was just like “oh fuck sorry, do I owe you a buck?” and we both just laughed it off and had another beer.

It’s not that hard to get along with people. 🤷‍♂️

They aren’t just on the internet.

I went to a college full of people like this, granted they were a minority there. But where I live it’s extremely common even outside of college that people get upset about this. I know several people who are in companies who require pronouns, etc. and I’ve had people come after me personally for not using them in my own correspondence privately, etc. Granted not every place is like this, but a lot of places increasingly do this ‘wear the ribbon’ type of nonsense and think if you don’t display the pride flag you are fair game for harassment and violence.

It is very hard to get along with people like that. Who basically think anyone who doesn’t conform to what they want is evil and feel free to abuse and harass those people.

Agree. There are some things American agrees on - example: if you are white don’t use the N word.

But there are a lot of other words/norms that we don’t agree on. Or ones that used to be ok and now aren’t. Example: Sweet Sixteen was a sweet and funny movie when it came out. Now it’s full of rape jokes and racist stereotypes. Same movie - culture changed.

Some folks adapted to those changes more quickly than others. Some folks want norms to change even more. Some folks still didn’t get the memo / are annoyed that people are acting like anything is different.

I did like that movie (am female, 50s) but I also agree it’s a good thing that rape jokes have become less ok. That said - I have a lot of compassion for folks who adapt more slowly. There are jokes you could make 20 yrs ago and everyone would laugh- but the same joke today will get you fired.

I think it’s really important to be kind and patient with folks who are slow to get the memo. I want to be respectful but he/she is a very hard habit to break. I’ll give it the old college try, but if you think I am a bad person for having a hard time adapting to that then I think your expectations are wildly unrealistic.

Even positive changes take time. Be kind to each other. If someone is unkind for sure call them out! But don’t get your panties in a wad of their language or humor is a little outdated but their actions are kind.
