I too enjoyed Grimm. How old is this idea?

17·18 hours agoApparently they need a good quarter and don’t care about the next couple of years. Linux wins.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Optimists of Lemmy, what gives you hope about the future?English
2·1 day agoWouldn’t it be good to just do it once. Damn, and it can be done, just not enough of a revenue stream. FU corpos. What we need is a bunch of people burning that model by just making good things that last near forever (what can we do now) and moving on to the next thing.
Do it once, do it right, move on. Not just pretty words.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Optimists of Lemmy, what gives you hope about the future?English
61·1 day agoIn general the last few centuries of history have been two steps back, three forward. Slavery (as a legal concept, not wage slavery) gone, or at least mostly unacceptable in many places. Automation meaning everyone has to work less (but you need a job to survive, the dream of an ever lessening work week has been squashed).
Hell, there’s actually a chance this upcoming generation might do more than just react violently against the absurdly Orwellian culture emerging (that’s OK, guillotines are appropriate) and perhaps have some coherent future trajectory.
OK, this was fairly pessimistic, but overall I believe humanity can overcome the capitalistic bullshit. Climate change will likely require it, cause for optimism, yay!

4·1 day agoPeople were talking about games going off (saleable, owned) discs and saying it’s coz discs degrade and I got to post this
Eh, that’s just the shitty organic medium they cheap out with. Metal dyes (M-Disc Blurays are 100GB good for 100 years, fine even for modern games) are great, shame they’re artificially expensive.
Newer glass or quartz optical discs with femtosecond lasers are good for 360TB for 100K years (claimed) in a similar footprint. See also M$ sitting on ‘Project Silica’ for most of a decade.
Shame corpos don’t want the CD burning revolution to happen again, just imagine what sneakernet would be like if you could fit all of Netflix in the palm of your hand burned on a USB peripheral.
I really like the utopian possibilities currently available, just needs a bit of capitalist kicking to flower.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is the Lemmy Community's opinion on Scouting?English
7·1 day agoOverall a positive experience, bit authoritarian, bit militaristic, but lots of useful skills, fostered a great appreciation of nature and wilderness. Principle seems sound, implementation has shown its flaws.
Honestly, I can see it being in a good place for a reinvention. Maybe socialist scouts or solarpunk scouts, maybe a whole slew of loosely connected (ideologically distributed even) scouts to give kids a choice. Could give it a chance to become more inclusive and safer. I’m using ‘scouts’ in a gender neutral form, applies to all genders and I see scouting as more exciting than guiding, which may appeal to all kids. Part of the diaspora could be each troop (and their parents) deciding where they stand on gender exclusion. Democracy scouts perhaps (direct at that scale).

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Cybersecurity bounty hunter says Samsung TVs use AI to record audio and screenshots for adsEnglish
1·2 days agoYup, ‘smart’ TVs should never get a live internet connection, ever. Don’t give it a WIFI password, if you have made that mistake change the password now. Attach a computer, preferably Linux, and use it as a monitor. Even if you then go ahead and use a streaming service (boo), at least you’re not just giving audio/video of your living room to Samsung as well.

Remember also Limelight. Better living via Chemistry.
