Analog vibrator
It’s almost as if responding to a shitpost is less difficult and dangerous than mounting a resistance against an oppressive militarized state. Who knew?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Optimists of Lemmy, what gives you hope about the future?
41·21 hours agoGenerally speaking, the world just keeps getting better in ways that matter.
Despite all the wars going on, this is probably the most peaceful time in human history; we just see every single conflict thanks to modern telecommunication.
There has always been terrible stuff going on in the world. Very little of the terrible things in the modern day are really new, it’s just a new form. And usually the new form is a bit friendlier than the last one.
Frankly, how bad the past was makes it hard to be anything but optimistic about the future. Overall, the best time to be alive in all of history is right now. There’s no reason to think that trend won’t continue.
We’ll defeat diseases, and get more efficient at producing the things we need, and develop technologies to solve problems. Sure, a lot of that will be expensive for a while if capitalism persists, but going into debt for cancer treatment beats dying of cancer.
And it’s never been easier to coordinate with such a huge number of people. We have the tools at our disposal to actively make the future better. We have to use them, but we do have them. And it really seems like people are starting to get interested in using those tools, and they’re only getting easier to use, which means with a little elbow grease we could progress from “better, year over year” to “actually good”.
The boomers are dying, the techbro bubble is almost ready to pop, the kids are organizing. I feel privileged to get to witness the next 50 years.
Shouldn’t have run your mouth. Don’t want to be called out for your stupidity, don’t say stupid things. Simple as.
Right, so you’ve got nothing. Except the need for attention, of course.
What the fuck are you talking about? The Snopes article does not corroborate your claim. At no point do they say it was “made up”. Seems like you’re projecting your own illiteracy.
Taken in isolation, sure. But when you have so many reports from so many people that are consistent with each other, disbelief becomes harder to suspend.
Then why did you bother commenting if you don’t know?
Where does it say that it’s “just nonsense shit made up”?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•You’ve been tasked with defining a new area of criminal law called “economic and financial violence,” and creating laws to prevent it. What actions would you try to criminalize?
1·2 days agoI say make the fine equal to or greater than the ill-gotten revenue.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What show or movie do you usually keep on in the background
7·3 days agoRight? Never whistle while you’re pissing. If I’m watching something, that’s what I’m doing. If I’m doing something else, TV is just a distraction. If I want background noise, I’ll put on some easy music.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•You’ve been tasked with defining a new area of criminal law called “economic and financial violence,” and creating laws to prevent it. What actions would you try to criminalize?
14·4 days agoThe fine for financial crimes needs to be in addition to whatever profit was made from the crime. If the punishment for a crime that gained $100 million is a $20 million fine, that’s not a punishment that’s just the cost of doing business.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are some idioms that no longer make sense? Can you think of a modern replacement?
0·7 days agoFYI this can still happen on liquid propane stoves, so not totally lost to time.
Maybe “Kill two birds with one stone”, because who hunts with stones anymore?
After very light research, it seems like Star Wars humans are the same species, although apparently originally it was intended that Star Wars was a story being relayed, and the “humans” in the story are only humans as a way to better relay the story to humans. Kinda like the aliens from Three Body Problem (the show at least, never read the books).

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What phrases of wisdom have really stuck with you?
0·14 days agoIn short: Don’t worry about it.
In long: If you have a problem, you can either do something about it or you can’t. If you can do something about it, do that thing instead of worrying. If you can’t, worrying just gives you an additional problem.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What work of fiction (book/comic/movie/tv show/etc.) changed the way you think about the world? Why?
2·2 months agoPeople have already mentioned Foundation, Stranger in a Strange Land, Discworld, Gurren Lagann, and Hitchhiker’s Guide, so I’ll add The Illuminatus Trilogy. It taught me a lot about how organizations tend to shake out, among other things.

I’m gonna push back on your characterization of Skibidi Toilet. I got curious and watched like, 60 episodes, and it’s a surprisingly moving series about solidarity and sacrifice. Some of the action sequences are pretty high quality, and the fact that it has basically no dialogue means that it transcends language barriers.
I hate to say it, but Skibidi Toilet is a sincerely good piece of media.
