12·5 hours agoThat’s not what the article says:
The Fort Bragg exercises were the first time in more than 20 years that U.S. Army chaplains, and personnel dedicated to religious affairs in the military, received training in how to contribute to temporary gravedigging on the battlefield, the Army said.
Edit: I read what you said better, and these aren’t actually in conflict. Why was the army asking chaplains to do it? Terrifying.
Prescriptivist nonsense
I love irregular conjugations in English, and I’m torn between being excited to see “forbade” in the wild and sad because it’s used for the perfect form, instead of the preterite.

2·19 hours agoThe normal Boston in Massachusetts was originally named after the Lincolnshire village town of Saint botolph, iirc, so new Boston probably refers to a new offshoot of Boston, MA, like CT’s new Milford/new Hartford, but I’d be lying if I said I knew.
That’s why I do that :)
I had to put in a request for a new shower hose every other month for a while, because my landlord got a bulk deal on the shittiest possible hoses and even without ever adjusting the position of my shower head, they would leak to the point that my shower was unusable after less than eight hours of total use (I shower quick).
I just send them a copy of the receipt and deduct it from my rent. That way I don’t have to see them in person

4·2 days agoI’m from Connecticut, the town names of which* fall roughly into three categories: Native American names, biblical place names, and English names. Under the latter category, we have new Britain and new London (arguably the only two which fit that pattern, though maybe New Haven is referencing an older British city I don’t know about), but we also have Manchester, Bolton, and Glastonbury, and of course just English language words or last names, like Plainville, Plainfield, and Putnam.
*This is also true for most other New England states and probably most of the east coast, with substitution for French or Spanish (and a little Dutch) for English/British as appropriate. Actually, I could see this being mostly true everywhere in the US, with the relevant settling nationality taking over for British town names and last names, but I could also see biblical place names being less popular in some states, maybe superseded by other religious references.

21·3 days agoYeah, you’re not breaking any rules afaik, it just feels hostile to me. I don’t think there’s a defined and universal purpose for a downvote on the fediverse (though it was for things that don’t contribute on reddit, so that carried over for a lot of people).

American military? The ones who bombed an elementary school and continuously target Caribbean fishermen? I’m glad you’ve seen a different side of them, but they’re not generally big on respecting civilians.
Unless you mean American civilians, which is kind of a fucked up distinction to draw, because American lives aren’t worth more than anyone else’s.

So gravy’s the same thing, just with a shortcut?

Tbh, I was picturing the chaplains digging, but overseeing and advising makes wayyyy more sense. Why have they never participated before?
