Least competent or least incompetent? The way you phrased it makes me think you have a typo but I’m not Canadian.

I didn’t realize you were talking about performance in the kernel, which I think will be incredibly hard to measure. That that’s usually the main focus of enterprise investment into Linux, so I very much doubt that an LLM is coming in and making improvements there, but maybe it’s happening. As far as I can tell all the latest things are security scans, which usually will result in worse performance since the goal isn’t speed but safety.

You literally stated that 8 billion people couldn’t stop the flow of the Mississippi river. Aside from the fact that the Mississippi ebbs and flows from 20 ft wide to a mile wide, 8 billion people take up a lot of mass. 8 billion people could reverse the flow of the river if they wanted.

It would have to use trillions of fewer cpu cycles to do that. Currently scientists estimate it at 8 cups of water consumed for every 100 word prompt. What developer do you know that consumes 8 cups of water a day much less every thirty seconds. A developer can sit there and think with their own mind, computer doing nothing, while an LLM consumes thousands of gallons of water and kilowatts of electricity to do the same thing.
How did they clean the pumpkin out???

on mac if you type three dots it autocorrects it to the triple dot character…

it most definitely would not. you ever switched the direction of a lazy river? doesn’t take that many people. Your ignorance is showing.

There’s also a huge difference between someone like Linus Torvalds, who understands code better than most people on earth, using AI supervised to increase productivity, and Timmy off the street having chatGPT build something he has no clue how it works or what code even does.
disagree. there’s no difference between the car mechanic or the politician pouring oil into the river. They’re both horrendous. sure, one of them might have a reason for doing so, but that reason isn’t a good reason.

That’s bamboo! Not as strong as wood in these situations.

I mean he’s welcome to develop an LLM that is trained on only his own stuff and that doesn’t suck down water like a black hole. Until then he shouldn’t be offering opinions on using them at all, I don’t care if it’s in regard to the Linux kernel or not.
Maybe my point with the nuclear bombs wasn’t clear enough. The nuclear engineer doesn’t get to decide to use a nuclear bomb, they get to use one tiny tiny little part. If they try to use a nuclear bomb we should all be stopping them, I don’t care how much they want to use it cause they think it’s a good tool. It’s provably horrific for humanity.

You’re totally right, I was trying to word it in a way that was in line with the survey results since the meme wasn’t so clear. But also I totally should have explained more since I complain about others not explaining enough all the time.
What I meant by AI was LLMs specifically.

you can’t invalidate already signed certificates. The major browsers use a block list that can be updated at any time in order to revoke certificates from use in that location. but otherwise everything still continues to use them. Firefox uses OneCRL and CRLite. Chrome uses CRLsets.

It was either that or suddenly be the slowest person at work, which eventually gets you canned.
turns out, you can just refuse to do so and you’ll still be just as fast as everyone else (source: me). Turns out that you’ll actually do the same amount of work and you don’t have to babysit a robot all day long losing your mind.

it gets down to whether experts are experts at everything. Linus is not an expert at anything outside of kernel maintenance. His opinions on whether we should use LLMs are null and void considering the massive effect on the planet. It’d be like if a nuclear engineer said we should be building more nuclear bombs for everyone to use, just so they could use nuclear engineer more freely. Like, their opinions about nuclear energy might be fine, but their opinions that have an effect on the entire planet are completely wack.

No that’s my opinion lol. I’m in the 1%. I wasn’t saying you used AI.

I think a very very large portion of people agree with you lol. Else you wouldn’t see so many alternative frameworks popping up and becoming veryyy popular. Svelte and Phoenix are what people are switching to

You should not be using AI at all. https://survey.stackoverflow.co/2026/ai
Can’t tell if this is a joke or not. You’re not hitting a drone with a shotgun at 400 feet, much less thousands of feet.
