• I’m a super smeller, and I’ve trained it well and made myself some party tricks. For example, I can identify a coffee down to the grow region and altitude based on the scent of a fresh cup.

Also I can roll myself up into a little ball and be very compact. I used to date someone with a thing for contortion, I don’t think I’ve really shown it off since.

I can write upside down pretty well. This once got me a job offer after I did all the example problems so they were upright for the interviewer.

I am a partial spirit level. I can be three rows away in the office and see someone has an object on screen that is 2mm out. Unfortunately I then struggle to focus.

As for house hunting it’s like curse looking about. It’s like I have to switch off all internal sensors.

My boss is like this. Having drawn and done arts and stuff I used to have a pretty decent visual level (before the glasses). At least I could wing it pretty good. But he could walk out, take one glance at something and immediately tell if anything isn’t perfectly square.

Sometimes I would scoff and check with a measure but he was always right.

I remarked on it one time and he said it was more of a curse.

yeh i get that a lot…they say no its not then start measuring and then turn around and say hmm how did you know that, and look at me like i am hiding binoculars or something. I try not to do it TBH unless its someone i am comfortable with, its rude of me but if i don’t i know work has gone out wonky. I would internally combust.

If I’ve heard it once, I can recognize any voice even years later. The more I hear a voice the better, obviously. It’ll drive me crazy until I look it up and confirm suspicions. On the rare occasion I get false positives from people who have similar pitch and patterns but overall I can identify an acquaintance, voice actor, celebrity, etc, across many different media even if they are playing different roles. I never forget a voice. I don’t know why.

Perhaps related, I can do a fair number of accents and mimic famous character speech patterns. It’s super silly.

I can do a pretty decent Smeagol impression, complete with moving about on all fours. There really isn’t a time and place for that to emerge, sadly.

    • Someone I knew ran a “talent show” about a decade ago for a summer show at a local theater.

What they wanted was a showcase of musical talents and things related to musical theater specifically. They neglected to put that in any of the advertising materials.

I was quite upset when they didn’t include a little girl who did a spot on Gollum impression with movement, props, and full scene reenactments. She was super excited to show everyone, and while everyone else was blown away, “this isn’t really the type of talent we’re going for” is all he could muster.

That girl was a solid 10/10, and should have been allowed a slot in the show.

Her talent is wonderful, a truly hidden artform. It’s a shame the talent show organizer couldn’t recognize that fact.

I can write entire sentences with my toes very easily. It’s a bit sloppy, but legible. However my toes cramp up quickly and I can’t perform all day. There goes my circus career.

Edit: with a pencil to be clear

I don’t think this is actually much of a big deal, but I can tune a guitar by ear no matter how out of tune.

My uncle is a guitar afficionado, and we got into an argument when I said I could. He said you needed some kind of reference note or something like that. Wouldn’t give up. So I grabbed a guitar, scrambled all the tuning and tuned it.

He bowed in awe, but I think he just never realized he’s not as musically inclined as he’d like to be? Maybe it’s not common, but I highly doubt it’s impressively rare…

Why does it have to be alpha or bravo or delta? What difference does it make if it were apple, boy, Dennis? As long as it does the job.

        Clarity and uniformity.

Remember, this was designed for old style, tube radios. They might repeat the message three times and still not get it perfectly.

RobWords on youtube or Nebula has a 20 minute video on the NATO phonetic alphabet thats more engaging than most. Worth a watch if you have the time, but the tl;dr is there needed to be a concise, interintelligible code to transmit as much data as possible over unreliable connections and multiple languages.

I did a ten month stint in a call center to make ends meet once. I had to quickly and unexpectedly learn this. And, occasionally put up with the, I’m guessing, old vets who insisted on rattling it as fast as possible when reading off serial numbers, etc. And, WOULD NOT slow down to accommodate me at all. So, I’d just ask them to repeat it sometimes four or five times, until I got it.

I can dislocate my arm/shoulder joint at will. It was cool as a kid; I could pull them far enough out of the joint to pinch my fingers around the collarbone. I still probably could, but now I’m old and haven’t hit my insurance deductible for the year, so not gonna try.
