$4 a gallon? Bullshit. It’s barely under $5 in the Midwest.
Texas generally has gas prices cheaper than the national average. It always shocks me when I go to other states.
Went on vacation to California this summer. $6+ everywhere…
We charge higher gas taxes and it still doesn’t come anywhere near covering the enormous expenses of road maintinence. Everywhere else subsidizes these infrastructure costs with even more tax dollars elsewhere, but the average voter is too stupid to know that.
Good news for those who like high fuel prices, US refineries are scaling back gasoline production to focus of diesel and kerosene where there are higher profit margins at the moment.
There’s higher profit margins implying it’s not expensive because it has higher cost, they just see higher profits, so they’ll be sure as hell not want to decrease price later
that’s not necessarily a the worst option for yall though… diesel transports your food. i think food being more expensive is probably worse than personal transport being more expensive… cutting back on transportation is often easier than cutting back on food: especially for the most vulnerable
Several Midwestern states have suspended gas taxes making it artificially low for the last couple months. I know Ohio and Indiana did so. It’s actually “under $4” in central Ohio right now.
I feel you, some places in Washington it’s a little over $5
I’ve seen lots of complaints from Americans about the cost of fuel, but never really done the work of converting it to £/Litre.
At current exchange rate, that’s about 99p per litre. The petrol stations near me are currently average out at £1.60 per litre. Or, to convert back to $ per gallon, a little over $8.
Fuel-wise, you guys have it alright.
Nearly every major American city is surrounded by suburbs without trains/subways, and most of those people are driving 30-60 minutes (one way) every day for work.
It’s not really reasonable to compare petrol prices between Europe and America because the requirements are so different.
If your gasoline prices double, you just skip some leisure activities. Maybe take public transport to work if you usually drive. If our gasoline prices rise, working people can no longer meet their monthly expenses…and there’s no wiggle room. There’s nothing left to cut back on. Certainly not the fuel that takes one to work in the first place.
I every other sense, I agree with you. I wish American cities were not this way. But they are.
Actually, I have done the conversion before! I’m a mathematician, it’s kind of my thing.
At the very least, I’m glad you guys (generally) have the luxury of shorter commutes and real public transportation infrastructure. So theoretically the price of fuel shouldn’t impact Europeans as much
Americans drive way, way more because of the layout of the entire country. It isn’t like many countries where you can bike most places or take public transport, so many people are dependent on cars for a large part of their day. And the government heavily subsidizes gas, so the fact that the prices are increasing very dramatically are telling to even the Americans who don’t understand economics or supply chains.
Yes but have you considered driving a your lifted pickup 50 miles down the worst freeway ever conceived by man to park it in your work parking lot for 8 hours?
The us is maaaany times bigger than Europe. And we have idiotic road designs and no trains. We drive a shit ton. The average is 10,000 miles a year. Per person.
Hello, friend. At least I live close to Idaho…
$4/gal I think was like the highest daily average this year. But its still up ~$1/gal.
Texas is where the refineries are. Transport costs are lower.
California, where refineries are, gas is almost $6/gal. Try again
Texas produces about 41% of the U.S.'s oil. California tops out at 1.8% and has been steadily declining
Scale makes the price difference.
https://worldoilmonitor.com/oil-production-by-state
Texas also holds a third of the country 's refining capacity, California only 8%
Louisiana refines twice as much oil as California and they have almost $6 a gallon diesel too.
In Germany it was more like 10$/gal. ಥ_ಥ Edit: more like 8$ without tax.
EU average is about 6.5 $/gal. And I think that’s still way too fucking cheap for the amount of harm it does to the planet
In Australia unleaded is about USD6.85 a gallon diesel is more like USD8.75 a gallon …
Yeah, I actually screwed that up a bit, the average is closer to 7.6 $/gal, and 8.9 $/gal for diesel.
Hopefully this means more trains and bike lanes, rather than switching to EVs.
Americans, please explain. Texas still has a Republican senator, right? So it’s only half blue?
Not every position was up for re-election. Ted cruz’s term doesn’t expire until 2030, but every position that was up for election swept Democratic.
1 of 2 are democratic senators yes, but also Democratic governor, Lt. Governor, Attorney General, Comptroller. Land Commissioner, Agriculture Commissioner, Railroad Commissioner.
And the state House of reps.
The one Republican Senator, Ted Cruz, was not up for reelection. Hopefully we’ll be rid of him soon too.
The fact that any senator in Texas is blue is just short of a miracle.

also places that were rarely if ever blue, became blue.
