  • “And then one day you find ten years have got behind you. No one told you when to run - you missed the starting gun.”

To anyone who finds this line chilling and profound, I have good news for you: You’re still young! Past a certain age, you start turning around to realize this or that thing was 30, 40 or even more years back. 10? Ha! Seriously, if that seems like a lot then the good news is you must still be pretty young. Still, of course, don’t miss the point of it.

  • Don’t worry, they have all the data on that, and I’m pretty sure they thought of it.

Fact is that most visits from search engines don’t go very deep anyway. They are allowing a brief glimpse at one page before they start prompting you to log in, and that is likely driving logins while barely shortening those SEO visits, which are not of great value in the first place.

It may come as a surprise but websites often have traffic they don’t want. I recall once my boss noticed there was a non-negligible amount of traffic from parts of the world none of our advertisers care about. He built an endless revolving door of promo offers and directed this traffic into it. It didn’t generate much money but it made the rest of our traffic look higher quality right away.

  • When I was in college I had a Shakespeare course that required me to get through about one play per week and I was falling behind on the reading. However I learned that the campus AV room had tapes of Royal Shakespeare Company productions which you could check out. There’s not always a Hollywood movie of every Shakespeare play and not all the movies stick to the text. But the RSC ones did 100% and they were well made. They weren’t captures from live performances with an audience, more like soap-opera level of production values.

But guess who was in all of them.

Patrick Stewart got me through college.

  • I’ll be honest with you. I prefer everything about Lenny’s technology and ownership/maintenance structure. However the only topic I know I can get consistent substantial input on here is communist revolution.

For literally everything else, Reddit has captured people who know things. They are enshittifying it to be sure but until I can post a picture of a coffee table on Lemmy and have someone tell me if it’s finished with lacquer or shellac, this will be the answer.

We don’t have to like it, and we should hope to change it. But please don’t pretend you can’t understand it. Critical mass of community investment builds up in one place, in Reddit’s case over decades, and it doesn’t quickly migrate away, even under some enshittification pressure. Perhaps in time.

What can you do, other than complain? You can start a community on some topic of substance here and build it up. Moderate. Post. Recruit key individuals away from Resditnwirh private messages. Wait.

Oh, does that sound like actual work? That’s because it is. Did you want to change things? Or just complain?

  • I would even go a step further than “get them to pay their own fair share.”

When we talk about taxing billionaires, as we are in California right now, they always say the same thing: we will just leave.

Well, maybe that’s a good thing. Billionaires flock to the US because they know they can do business with a free hand here and keep all the profits. And we see the results: capture of the state, exploitation of the workers, pollution of the media.

Maybe it would be good for the US if it were no longer seen as the billionaires business paradise and they fucked off somewhwre else to try their luck?
