Degoog has a Lemmy plugin
Is degoog any good?
I was self hosting searxng for a long time then after one of the updates I stopped getting results. A friend of mine told me about degoog so I switched and so far I like it. It has a lot of plugins and addons. I basically have it looking or feeling like Google used to. I was also able to incorporate my ollama instance for LLM summaries if I add a question mark in my searches.
That sounds nice i tried degood when it was first out. Seems like its gotten a lot more support now.
How did you integrate ollama with it? That sounds like an interesting setup.
I’ll give it a shot, thanks!
What ? This isn’t new. They have had this for years.
New to one in 10k, or whatever (xkcd)
That doesn’t mean invalidate their comment. The title’s claim is false.
The title’s claim is false?
Does Kagi not have a Fediverse Forms search toggle now?
It doesn’t have it “now”, it’s had it for a while. Maybe a better word is “inaccurate”? Saying it’s new is a lie.
It does have it now I just checked. It may have also had it then, but I can’t confirm that. From your testimony, it seems like Kagi both has this toggle now, and had this toggle then
That’s not new. They’ve had it for a long time now.
I like what Kagi are doing, even though I don’t pay for their search engine. I’ve been enjoying browsing the Kagi Small Web portal recently.
If Kagi were Free (as im Free Beer), Libre (as in Free Speech/Freedom) and Open Source, it were perfect.
But not only it’s not open source, but also it’s paid. I ain’t using nothing that isn’t FLOSS.
And they use Yandex as part of their underlying search.
At this point, I don’t see why that is any worse than using the services of any US-based Big Tech companies. They have the same kind of anti-privacy business model, their local political regimes have both gone off the rails, and law enforcement and intelligence agencies can legally or extra-judicially snoop through collected data without the user ever knowing.
Some of the services provided by Yandex are, quality-wise, decent enough. I personally tend to find their translation service to be as good or better, as compared to similar services, such as Google Translate or DeepL, so it’s usually my API of choice through Mohzi.
For me its not about the quality provided but about not supporting a company located in a questionable country. To me that includes both the US and Russia.
I agree. But that’s why I was wondering why you were singling out Yandex in particular, when Kagi also sources from questionable US companies.
To me, they’re all equally problematic.
It’s too bad they require a subscription. I’ll never use this shit for this reason alone.
I’d pay if it wasn’t based in the US.
Uruki presents itself as a European alternative to Kagi. They seem to have a different vision, however (no AI and just focused on a search engine). On the other hand, I didn’t try because I find the price a bit high for the little comfort it brings me, but it’s still good to test!
I was paying for Kagi and quite happy with it, but I’m gonna try Uruki for a few months since my Kagi subscription was almost coming to an end.
Then I’ll see if I stick with Uruki or go back to Kagi.
Thabks for letting us know about that product!
If you’re up for it, I’d absolutely love a mini-review/comparison, at the end of your evaluation. Or, not-so-mini, if you feel like it. Post it on Lemmy, perhaps (and remember to ping me!). :)
To be honest, I’m probably not gonna use it enough to review it. Specifically, I’m really gonna use it like a grandma so I don’t feel like it would honest to review it.
It’s as if I asked my 9 year old son to review a car😅
Hahah, that’s fair!
That sounds like how most of us would use it, though. Normal, subjective opinions can be really helpful, and a mini-review doesn’t really need anything more than that. :)
I’d pay for it if their $5 a month tier wasn’t so limited
No one should have to pay to search the web. They’re as bad as all the other monetized bullshit.
It costs money to maintain software?
I Kagi’s case they are paying per search to connect to APIs to search other search engines and aggregate the results. They have a very real cost per search that isn’t only maintaining software.
Wouldn’t that be part of the “maintenance” cost? If I run an ice cream cart, I need to keep purchasing supplies to keep selling ice cream.
No, usually materials cost is tracked separately from equipment maintenance.
God dang people, maintenance is in quotes for a reason.
Wasn’t supposed to be as technically correct as possible. Meant to express to the original person that things cost money, that’s it.
