World News@lemmy.world•Brazil Puts Forward Global Plan to Wean World Off Fossil FuelsEnglish
1·2 days agoWhat’s actually working for transport is battery-electric. About half the heavy trucks in China sold in the past few months have been done like that.
My expectation is that we’ll see solar to hydrogen used for decarbonizing the chemicals industry, but not much else, largely because batteries have gotten so cheap and so energy dense.

World News@lemmy.world•Brazil Puts Forward Global Plan to Wean World Off Fossil FuelsEnglish
3·2 days agoThat sadly doesn’t work terribly well (we burn a lot of methane producing fertilizer for the corn) and doesn’t scale up to the world.

Technology@lemmy.world•Google Will Turn Off Search for Schools That Reject A.I.English
32·2 days agoUm what? Self-hosting search that actually covers the internet requires way more resources than people are likely to have. There are things you can self-host, but global internet search is not one of them.

Technology@lemmy.world•Old, Polluting Jet Engines Are Being Scavenged to Power Data CentersEnglish
3·3 days agoThis is what happens when companies are incentivized to turn on data centers fast above any kind of environmental protection or efficiency goal.

News@lemmy.world•New US Data Centers Projected to Emit More Carbon Than All of Mexico
1·7 days agoWater that salty is corrosive. You can’t just use it for datacenter cooling (or running a power plant) without removing the salt at considerable cost. It’s cheaper to bribe politicians to transfer fresh water into their use than it is to desalinate that and use it.

News@lemmy.world•New US Data Centers Projected to Emit More Carbon Than All of Mexico
1·7 days agoI’m not looking for a silver bullet. But part of success is demand avoidance. And creating demand at the scale the datacenters are doing is going to make it far far harder to get to zero.

They’re not even trying though

News@lemmy.world•New US Data Centers Projected to Emit More Carbon Than All of Mexico
1·8 days agoA single new datacenter in the pipeline from Amazon is going to consume above 7000MW. Landfill can and should be burned in useful ways, but it’s not going to supply anything like what the tech industry is planning to use.

politics @lemmy.world•Kennedy to Allow Broad Use of Unapproved Peptide Injections
16·8 days agoThe problem is not that they can’t work; some do. It’s that an uregulated supply chain for an injectable with no requirement to demonstrate safety or effectiveness is a recipe for a mix of dangerous products and snake oil

News@lemmy.world•New US Data Centers Projected to Emit More Carbon Than All of Mexico
4·9 days agoBrownfield development would be perfect for data centers, but it’s slower and costs more.
There isn’t undesired water or electricity sources available at anything like the scale the AI companies want though; these things use truly huge amounts of energy

politics @lemmy.world•Two Blocks in Pennsylvania Show Why It’s So Hard for Campaigns to Reach Voters | In a competitive House district, residents get their election news from under-the-radar sources — or no sources at all.
2·9 days agoIt’s more that the news used to be funded in part (or whole) by advertising. Basically a newspaper was an ad delivery mechanism, with the news part being there only to get you to look at ads. Without that, news is unaffordable for most, so you end up with people just disconnecting.

politics @lemmy.world•Musk-Linked Dark Money Network Funded the Group Behind Cornel West’s Ballot Push
24·10 days agoIt does if you register. Small news outlets got to be funded somehow.
Be really nice to build some local community so that you can both self host and have this kind of support if you need it
